Brocade is originally a heavier silk fabric with jacquard patterning.
In the 21st century, the term brocade is also used for (all) fabrics with a distinctive embossed pattern.
Cotton brocades with jacquard patterns are particularly well known.

In Europe, brocades were known from about the 13th century from Italy. From the Italian broccare (to embroider) comes the name of this fabric used in small variations in European languages.
