Brocade Dog and Thistle

Brocade is originally a heavier silk fabric with jacquard patterning.

In the 21st century, the term brocade is also used for (all) fabrics with a distinctive embossed pattern.

Cotton brocades with jacquard patterns are particularly well known.

Finds from present-day Iran dating back 2000 years show that brocades with typical motifs of flowers, animals and human figures were produced there

In Europe, brocades were known from about the 13th century from Italy. From the Italian broccare (to embroider) comes the name of this fabric used in small variations in European languages.
